THE LICENSING PROCESS

The purpose of this page is to provide basic information about the motorcycle licensing process. Licensing is handled by the State Government’s Department of Planning and Infrastructure’s Transport Department Licensing Services division. You should be aware that licensing conditions change from time to time and further information can be obtained directly from the Department for Planning and Infrastructure’s licensing web-site or by contacting them directly. All of the pertinent contact details appear on the permit.

first license?

If a motorcycle license is to be your first you will have to satisfy all the normal first license requirements. Once you have passed your practical riding test you will be required to complete 25 hours of supervised riding. The details of this will be recorded in a log book. You will then have to complete a hazard perception test prior to being issued with your provisional license. You will be a provisional license holder for two years during which time you have to display P plates on your bike.

cost

The cost for an R-E learner’s permit is $72.40*. This includes the cost for a single practical riding test and the permit for twelve months. If you fail at your first attempt you will need to rebook the test and pay an additional fee.

Once you have passed your practical riding test the class for which you have tested is automatically added to you license. There is a small fee to have your license reissued with the new class on it if you do not wish to wait until your current license expires for renewal.
